2/2, or 2-way 2-position, valves are directional control valves used in situations where a hydraulic system needs to run when triggered by a button, etc., and stop when released (or vice versa).

The different positions of the spool in a valve are called “positions.” Transitions between these positions are made using various actuation methods: manual actuation (button, pin, etc.), mechanical actuation (for example, roller/lever-controlled), actuation by electrical signal (solenoid valves), hydraulic actuation, and so on.

Sometimes, position changes are achieved through spring return. For example, when a button is pressed and we take our hand off it, the valve returning to its previous position happens through spring return.

How Does a 2-Way 2-Position Valve Work

Two-way, two-position valves are designated 2/2. These valves have two positions. Each position has two ports: one inlet and one outlet. These valves can be normally open or normally closed. They’re generally used for open/close operations.

2-way 2-position spring-return valve

 2-Way 2-Position directional control valves have 2 connections and 2 switch positions. This is where the name comes from. It works as follows.
1- In this switch position, hydraulic oil flow is stopped
2- In this switch position, hydraulic oil flow is allowed to pass freely.

A 2/2 valve could, for example, be connected to a vehicle lift platform. The valve opens the connection between a single-acting cylinder and the reservoir. This way, the load pushes the cylinder’s piston all the way down to its lowest point. In the valve’s other position, the fluid path closes, and the lift platform is safely stopped.

Simple On/Off Function


2/2 directional control valves, with just two ports and two positions, are used to simply turn flow on and off.

Normally Open/Closed Type


These valves can be designed to default to a normally open or normally closed position when no energy is applied.

Simple Circuit Applications


2/2 valves are widely used in simple pneumatic and hydraulic circuits that need to cut off/start a single flow path.
