In the medal standings of long-distance races, marathons, and Olympic middle- and long-distance events around the world, Kenya paints an incredible success story relative to its population.

So how does this small East African country manage to leave the rest of the world so far behind? The answer isn’t hidden in a single factor, but in the combination of several elements that reinforce one another.

The Power of Altitude: A Natural Training Laboratory

The vast majority of Kenya’s elite runners live and train in the Rift Valley, at altitudes of 1,800 to 2,800 meters above sea level.

At this altitude, the oxygen density in the air is lower than at sea level; the body begins producing more red blood cells to adapt. This physiological adaptation gives athletes a higher oxygen-carrying capacity in their blood. When these athletes descend to sea level on race day, it’s as if they’ve gained a “superpower,” allowing them to carry oxygen to their muscles far more efficiently.

This is why the town of Iten is known worldwide as the “Home of Champions.” This small town, at 2,400 meters altitude, and the surrounding Kaptagat region, are home to dozens of international training camps; runners from all over the world come here just to take advantage of this natural edge.

A Habit Rooted in Childhood

Another key piece of Kenya’s running success is a lifestyle that begins in childhood. Many Kenyan children, especially those growing up in rural areas, traditionally run several kilometers to and from school every day; in some regions this distance reaches as much as 10 kilometers a day.

This builds a natural foundation of endurance developed from childhood, without any formal training program. By the time these children reach adulthood, they already carry years of accumulated “base training.”

The Kalenjin Community: The Dominant Role of a Single Ethnic Group

An interesting detail: much of Kenya’s long-distance success is achieved by athletes belonging to the Kalenjin ethnic group, which makes up about 13 percent of the country’s population. Names like Kip Keino, Paul Tergat, Tegla Loroupe, David Rudisha, and Eliud Kipchoge, history’s first athlete to run an officially recorded marathon under two hours, are all of Kalenjin descent.

This is explained by both geographic factors (living in the Rift Valley) and cultural ones (running becoming part of their communal identity); running success has essentially become a source of pride and identity for Kalenjin youth.

Although scientists have identified certain genetic markers associated with running performance within this community, the topic is still a debated area in academic circles; it isn’t clear whether genetic factors or environmental and cultural factors are more decisive.

Economic Motivation: Running as a Career Path

In Kenya, long-distance running isn’t just a sport for many young people; it’s also one of the most realistic paths out of poverty. Placing well in an international marathon can mean earnings that fundamentally change an athlete’s and their family’s life.

The traditional Kenyan diet is based on carbohydrate-heavy, low-fat foods such as ugali, made from corn flour; this diet is naturally well suited to the energy demands of long-distance running.

In addition, training camps in the Iten and Eldoret regions offer a strong support network of experienced coaches, physiotherapists, and elite athletes. At these camps, young athletes get the opportunity to train alongside experienced runners while also gaining access to the infrastructure needed for a professional career.

A Curious Detail: Kenya’s Rival, Ethiopia

Kenya’s biggest rival in long-distance running is its neighboring country, Ethiopia. Ethiopia also has similarly high-altitude geography and a strong running culture; legendary names like Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele came from this country.

The rivalry between the two countries has continued for decades on major international marathon courses and Olympic tracks, and this rivalry has helped push athletes from both countries to even higher levels.
