Work Instructions for a Surface Grinding Machine

Things to Pay Attention to Before Working on a Surface Grinding Machine

  1. Check whether the surface grinding machine is suitable for operation.
  2. Check whether the table works by moving it by hand crosswise, lengthwise, and up and down, and check the grinding wheel by turning it by hand as well.
  3. For occupational safety on the surface grinding machine, wear your personal protective equipment such as goggles and a mask.
  4. Make a plan according to the job you’ll be doing, or ask your teacher for help.
  5. Make sure all the corner edges of the workpiece are chamfered so the workpiece can sit fully on the table surface.
  6. If there is no abnormal condition, place the workpiece on the table.
  7. Center the workpiece to be ground on the magnetic table over the high-flux lines.
  8. Turn on the magnetic table and make sure the workpiece is secured. Place a lower, wide-surfaced part stop against the front and back faces of small parts.
  9. Bring the grinding wheel to a height of 5 mm above the top surface of the part.
  10. Install all of the machine’s guard plates.
  11. Set the longitudinal travel table stroke of the grinding machine.
  12. Move the travel table to bring the grinding wheel close to the workpiece at zeroing distance. Lock your measuring dial.
  13. If your settings are complete, we can start machining by running your machine.

Safe Working Rules on a Surface Grinding Machine

  1. Apply a cut only after a full stroke has been completed over the workpiece with the table motion.
  2. Use suitable coolant so that the grinding wheel and workpiece don’t lose their properties by overheating.
  3. For safe working on a surface grinding machine, don’t let people who would distract you during your work come near the machine, or stand in front of it or in the table’s travel area.
  4. Don’t try to do cleaning or dimensional checks during the grinding operation — focus only on the workpiece and the machine.
  5. Remember that the grinding machine is intended for precision surfaces and precision dimensions.
  6. Take cuts at a percentage-based value. Don’t strain the machine and grinding wheel by taking a heavy cut. Don’t experiment. Use the dimensions your teacher has given as a reference.
  7. Remember that the grinding wheel breaking or shattering can cause severe and fatal harm to the operator and surroundings.
  8. Don’t get too close to the workpiece to visually check it while the operation is in progress.
  9. Don’t keep parts waiting for processing on the machine.
  10. At the end of the operation, park the grinding wheel toward the right rear of the table.

Things to Do After Working on a Surface Grinding Machine

  1. Stop the grinding wheel, the hydraulic system, and the magnetic table.
  2. Don’t reach your hand over the magnetic table before the grinding wheel has fully stopped spinning. Don’t try to remove the workpiece. Once it has stopped spinning, remove the workpiece from the machine.
  3. If we can’t tell visually whether it’s still spinning, hold a simple piece of wire to the side surface of the grinding wheel.
  4. Clean the measuring and inspection tools and put them back in their places.
  5. If no further work will be done on the machine, clean it.
  6. Dry any parts that got wet during cleaning with a cloth (cotton waste).
  7. Lubricate the parts that need lubrication to prevent rusting.
  8. Check the oil level periodically so the machine doesn’t run low on oil.
