What Is Active Park Assist? How Does It Work?

Aktif Park Yardımı Nedir. Nasıl Çalışır

What Is Active Park Assist?

Active Park Assist is an extremely advanced driver assistance system that helps the driver park the vehicle. Assistance systems like a rearview mirror only show what’s behind the vehicle. But active park assist goes far beyond normal parking assistance.

The Active Park Assist system relies on sensors and camera systems in the vehicle and helps the driver find a suitable parking spot. The driver gives the system the necessary commands to start the parking process, and the system carries out the parking maneuver automatically. The Active Park Assist system aims to make parking easier, reducing the driver’s time and stress.

Ultrasonic Sensors

Active park assist systems use ultrasonic sensors on the bumper to detect a suitable parking spot.

Automatic Steering Control

The system turns the steering wheel automatically during the parking maneuver, while the driver usually only controls the gas and brake pedals.

Minimum Clearance Calculation

Active park assist calculates the minimum clearance needed for parking, based on the vehicle’s dimensions, with millimeter precision.

How Does Active Park Assist Work?

This system operates with the help of ultrasonic sensors and performs the following two main activities:

  1. Identifying a parking spot
  2. Parking the vehicle in the identified spot
how active park assist works

The system activates when the vehicle is moving forward at speeds below 30 km/h. The system interprets this as the driver looking for a parking spot. It then begins scanning the surrounding area for a suitable parking spot. It does this with the help of ultrasonic sensors placed on the front and rear bumpers. When it identifies a suitable spot, it gives the driver a signal on the instrument panel. If the driver stops and shifts the vehicle into reverse, the system takes over.

From this point on, the system provides all the steering and braking inputs itself, parking the vehicle in the identified spot. It also calculates the ideal path to the parking spot with the help of the electronic control unit. The driver only needs to observe and can intervene at any time if necessary. Active Park Assist is so precise that it can safely park the vehicle in a space only 1.2 meters longer than the vehicle itself.

The Active Park Assist system works by following these steps:

  1. The driver gives the system the necessary commands to start the parking process. These commands usually take the form of pressing a button or switch found on the vehicle’s console.
  2. The system uses the sensors and camera systems in the vehicle to scan for a suitable parking spot.
  3. If a suitable parking spot is found, the system shows the driver where this parking spot is and asks for the driver’s approval.
  4. If the driver approves, the system carries out the parking maneuver automatically. This is done using the electronic control unit (ECU) that controls the vehicle’s movements.
  5. Once the parking maneuver is complete, the system notifies the driver and the vehicle is parked.

How to Recognize an Active Park Assist Fault

The symptoms of a fault in the Active Park Assist system are as follows:

  1. Error messages appear when the system is activated.
  2. The system can’t find a suitable parking spot and can’t start the parking process.
  3. Even if the system starts the parking process, it can’t control the vehicle’s movements correctly.
  4. The system keeps moving the vehicle even after the parking process is complete.

When the Active Park Assist system malfunctions, there’s a possibility that the sensors in the system or the electronic control unit (ECU) are faulty, so professional repair is required.

Related Questions

The system automatically turns the steering wheel using data from the sensors and cameras; the driver usually only presses the gas and brake. This automates the steering movement, which is usually the most skill-demanding part of parking.

The ultrasonic sensors on the bumper scan gaps along the roadside as the vehicle moves slowly. By comparing this against the vehicle’s own dimensions, it calculates whether this gap is large enough for safe parking.
