Types of Lasers
Today, there are many types of laser equipment on the market. Different types of lasers are used for different materials and different requirements. In the end, there’s no single laser technology that can meet every requirement. The types of lasers are as follows:
Nd:YAG or Solid-State Laser
The Nd:YAG (Neodymium Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet) laser is a type of laser. The Nd:YAG laser uses laser light generated within an Nd:YAG crystal.
The Nd:YAG laser can have longer operating distances than other laser types and can offer higher energy output. The Nd:YAG laser also has advantages such as high efficiency and long service life.
The wavelength of the beam emitted by the YAG laser is approximately 1μm. This is in the near-infrared band.
Applications of the Nd:YAG Laser
The following applications take advantage of the Nd:YAG laser’s benefits, such as efficiency, long service life, flexibility of beam delivery, easy integration with other systems, and powerful energy output:
- Industrial Processing: The Nd:YAG laser is used for cutting, welding, or electroplating plastic and metal materials in manufacturing processes, as well as for marking.
- Medical Applications: The Nd:YAG laser is used in medical applications such as dermatological treatments (removing skin blemishes, tattoo removal, hair removal, etc.) and dentistry.
- Chemistry and Biology: Used for molecular and biological research and analysis.
- Manufacturing Testing: Used to test the quality and performance of products.
- Marine Industry: Used in the production and maintenance of submarines and marine vessels.

CO2 Laser
The CO2 laser (Carbon Dioxide laser) is a gas-based laser. It uses electrically heated CO2 gas to produce laser light. The CO2 laser has a long wavelength of light and is preferred for cutting, processing, engraving, and similar operations on thick materials. The CO2 laser can be used in many fields, such as medical applications, industrial processing, graphic design, agriculture, and textile manufacturing.
The CO 2 laser is the highest-power CW laser currently available. Compared to solid-state lasers, the main difference is that its wavelength is 9.4 to 10.6 μm.
The CO 2 laser’s power range varies from below 10 watts to above 20,000 watts, and it can operate in continuous-wave mode or in pulsed conditions.

The CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) laser is preferred in many industrial, commercial, and medical applications.
- Industrial Processing: The CO2 laser is used for cutting, processing, and marking plastic, paper, rubber, and metal materials.
- Medical Applications: Used in medical applications such as dermatological treatments, ophthalmology, and dentistry.
- Graphic Design: Used for cutting and marking paper, cardboard, and other materials.
- Agriculture: Used in the manufacturing and maintenance of agricultural machinery.
- Textile Manufacturing: Used for cutting and processing textile products.
Ultraviolet Laser
The UV laser is mainly used in advanced research, development, and industrial manufacturing equipment. It’s also widely used in biotechnology, medical equipment, and disinfection equipment requiring UV radiation.

The DPSS UV laser, based on Nd:YAG / Nd:YVO4 crystal, is an excellent choice for micromachining systems and is widely used in printed circuit boards and consumer electronics.
Applications of the UV Laser
The ultraviolet (UV) laser is preferred in many industrial and medical applications. The following applications take advantage of the UV laser’s benefits, such as efficiency, high energy output, and precise light source:
- Industrial Processing: The UV laser is used for processing, cutting, and marking plastic and metal materials.
- Medical Applications: Used in medical applications such as dermatological treatments, treating eye conditions, and dentistry.
- Microelectronics Manufacturing: Used in the manufacturing of microchips and other electronic products.
- Chemistry and Biology: The UV laser is used for molecular and biological research and analysis.
- Manufacturing Testing: The UV laser is used to test the quality and performance of products.
Since the UV laser has a higher energy output than other laser types, it’s especially preferred for more demanding operations.

Semiconductor Laser
Also known as laser diodes, semiconductor lasers are lasers that use semiconductor materials as the working medium. Commonly used materials include gallium arsenide (GaAs), cadmium sulfide (CdS), indium phosphide (InP), zinc sulfide (ZnS), etc.
Applications of the Semiconductor Laser
The semiconductor laser is preferred in many fields, such as data storage, optical communication, imaging, industrial processing, and medical applications. For example:
- Data Storage: The semiconductor laser is used to read optical discs such as CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays.
- Optical Communication: The semiconductor laser is used for data transmission over fiber optic cables.
- Imaging: The semiconductor laser is used for image generation in projectors, barcode scanners, and industrial cameras.
- Industrial Processing: The semiconductor laser is used for processing, cutting, and marking plastic and metal materials.
- Medical Applications: The semiconductor laser is used in medical applications such as dermatological treatments, dentistry, and ophthalmology.
In these applications, the semiconductor laser’s advantages, such as efficiency, low power consumption, high precision, and long service life, are the reasons it’s preferred.
Fiber Laser
The fiber laser is a type of optical laser system. The fiber laser uses laser light generated within a single-mode optical fiber. The fiber laser offers higher energy efficiency, more precise cuts, faster cutting speeds, and longer service life compared to other laser types.
The fiber laser uses glass fiber doped with rare earth elements as the gain medium to produce different wavelengths.
Today, the fiber laser is a widely used piece of laser equipment on the market, since its technology is relatively mature, affordable, and has low operating costs.
Differences of the Fiber Laser from Other Laser Types
- Processing quality: The fiber laser offers very high precision for clean, accurate cuts on metal and other materials.
- Efficiency: The fiber laser is a highly energy-efficient technology and consumes less energy during processing.
- Productivity: The fiber laser offers fast cutting speeds and high efficiency, which increases productivity.
- Cost-Effectiveness: The fiber laser can offer a more affordable price compared to other laser types.
- Independence: The fiber laser is a technology that isn’t dependent on weather conditions and is easier to use.
