What Is a Scooter?
A scooter is a small, two-wheeled vehicle. They generally use a gasoline engine to run. Previously, manufacturers offered a Two-Stroke/Spark-Ignition (SI) engine for scooters. Today, due to emission control, they use a Four-Stroke/Spark-Ignition (SI) engine to power them. However, AI-equipped battery-powered electric scooters have now started to become popular around the world.

In general, manufacturers divide two-wheeled vehicles into two main categories. These are — Scooters and Mopeds. There’s also another subcategory called Scooterets. However, most fall into these two main categories based on their application and use.
The Italian brands Vespa and Lambretta were the first to make them popular worldwide. In general, most scooters in developing countries have varying sizes and prices to suit the local market. Also, scooters or mopeds are vehicles people use for daily commuting over very short distances, ranging from 5 km to 50 km.
For this reason, manufacturers offer smaller engine capacities for these bikes. Therefore, entry-level scooters and mopeds are those with an engine capacity of around 100cc and a power output of up to 10 bhp. However, some premium scooters or mopeds offer engine sizes between 100cc and 200cc, providing more power.

Scooters designed for urban use are mostly limited to a speed of 20-25 km/h.

Properties of Scooters:
Most of the time, scooters have a simple design/shape and manufacturing process. For this reason, they’re technically more economical than sport bikes and cruisers to buy. Scooters have a moderate mileage and maintenance level. Their primary focus is driving comfort and convenience. Some manufacturers offer special features to improve performance and fuel economy.
For example, Honda provides Honda Eco Technology, while Suzuki provides Suzuki Eco Performance to improve fuel economy. As a result, some of these scooters achieve up to an average of 60 km/L, as the respective manufacturer claims. They also have cheap and durable spare parts. Therefore, they don’t have many minor issues to deal with.
Differences Between Scooters and Motorcycles
Scooters and motorcycles can similarly be described as two-wheeled vehicles, but there are some fundamental differences between them.
- Purpose of use: Scooters are generally used for urban transportation, while motorcycles are preferred for faster travel and long distances.
- Control: On scooters, the rider only needs to use the throttle and brake pedals, while motorcycles require shifting gears.
- Safety: Since scooters are less fast, they’re considered safer and carry a lower risk of injury.
- Rentals: Scooters more commonly offer a rental option, while motorcycles usually aren’t rented.
- Size: Scooters are generally smaller and lighter, while motorcycles can be larger and heavier.
Advantages of the Scooter:
Most scooters are affordable to buy and use. They offer users an economical personal transportation solution. For this reason, they’re more popular in developing countries such as India, China, and South Asian countries. Some motorcycles are considered scooters depending on the amount of power and torque they produce. Most scooters use an automatic transmission, or Continuously Variable Transmission, i.e. a CVT.
For example, the Hero Pleasure, Honda Activa, and TVS Wego are scooters. The Aprilia and Vespa, with 150cc engines, are also in the premium scooter segment. Generally, premium scooters have higher power and torque, fashionable colors, and a sporty design/style. According to Honda, the 110cc Honda Navi is neither a scooter nor a motorcycle. It has a bit of both. So, it can be called a scooteret.
To summarize, scooters handle daily urban transportation smoothly. They also cope quite well in stop-and-go traffic thanks to their short wheelbase, turning circle diameter, and compact size. They also offer good comfort and convenience. For this reason, they’re primarily ideal for urban travel. Some premium scooters offer better suspension, safety, and other features. So, they’re more costly. Thus, the more luxurious features a scooter has, the higher price it sells for.
Disadvantages of the Scooter:
However, due to limited safety, insufficient suspension, and braking capability, scooters aren’t ideal for long-distance riding. For this reason, most people only use them in urban areas for their daily commute.

- Vespa: Manufactured by the Italy-based Piaggio Group, Vespa is one of the most well-known scooter brands worldwide.

- Yamaha: Yamaha is a Japan-based company that manufactures products such as motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, and Jet Skis.
- Piaggio: This is an Italy-based company that, in addition to the Vespa brand, manufactures scooters, motorcycles, electric scooters, and three-wheeled vehicles.
- SYM: This is a Taiwan-based company that manufactures motorcycles and electric vehicles, in addition to scooters.
- KYMCO: This is a Taiwan-based company that manufactures motorcycles, ATVs, and electric vehicles, in addition to scooters.
- Peugeot: A French company that manufactures scooters in addition to automobiles.
