How Is Car Window Fogging Prevented

Window fogging affects your driving safety and comfort while driving. Typically, window fogging occurs in bad weather conditions — which means you’re not only dealing with poor weather, but also unable to see where the road is.

We all know why windows fog up while the vehicle is stationary, but why do windows fog up while driving, and how do we prevent window fogging?

Why Do Windows Fog Up?

Window fogging is actually caused by what we call condensation. That is, the temperature of the glass is lower than the ambient temperature, and the air that touches the glass condenses, changing from a gaseous state to a liquid state. The higher the humidity of the air inside, the more condensation occurs.

Moisture that can come from shoes or wet clothing, a forgotten bottle of water, your own breathing. When you turn on your car’s ignition, the heater kicks in, and the warm air inside the car comes into contact with the cold windshield, causing condensation on the windows.

To prevent condensation, you need to remove the moisture inside the car. Sounds simple enough, right?

Preventing Window Fogging

1- Keep the windows clean: Water particles adhere more easily to dust and contaminants on the window. If the windows are clean, this will reduce fog formation.

2- Check whether your car has a water leak. The more moisture there is inside the car, the higher the likelihood of fogging. A leak may originate from a door seal or the sunroof.

3- Get anti-fog products: There are products on the market designed to reduce fogging by applying a coating to the glass. Check product reviews to see if they are effective.

4- Remove excess water: Don’t bring water into the car. In rainy weather, try not to bring wet clothes and umbrellas into the car. If possible, keep them in the trunk.

5- Moisture absorbers: This might sound silly, but car dehumidifiers actually exist. These can be placed under the windshield to remove moisture. You can even keep some baking soda or cat litter in the car. You can fill a cloth bag with cat litter and hang it somewhere near the front.

6- Ventilate the interior: Circulate the air. The vents should be open, and it’s also a good idea to crack a window open before parking to let the vehicle release the humid air.

If the problem is on the rear window, the cause of the fogging may be that the defroster wires on the rear window are not working or have broken.

Moisture Condensation


Window fogging occurs when humid air inside the vehicle comes into contact with the cold glass surface and condenses.

An internet content creator from abroad tried various alternatives to find a definitive solution to the fogging problem on vehicle windows. He divided a window into 5 sections and tried a different product for each section. He tested whether some things his followers claimed “worked” could solve the fogging problem.

How to Clear Fog from Vehicle Windows?

Air conditioning (A/C): Not just for hot days. If you have A/C, use it. The idea here is to remove moisture — unlike hot air, cold air from the A/C is faster and more effective at clearing fog on the windshield.

Heater: If you don’t want to freeze while the A/C is running, turn on the heater and direct the heat toward the windows.

Defogging cloth: Keep a cloth in the car to wipe the moisture off the windshield. Some people suggest that a whiteboard eraser is a great tool for clearing fog. Your preference may differ. Make sure you’re not making things worse by using a material that dirties the windshield. And remember, safety comes first — always pull over to the side of the road before trying to wipe the windshield.

Fresh air circulation: Make sure the fresh-air vents are open to let fresh air in and let humid air out.
