White Smoke Coming from the Exhaust
In this article, we’ll cover the possible reasons white smoke comes out of a vehicle’s exhaust. If white smoke is coming out of your exhaust and you’re wondering why, read on.
If white smoke is coming out of your vehicle’s exhaust, it means water is entering the engine’s combustion chamber. A cylinder head gasket that’s installed incorrectly, burned, or partially damaged can cause the water circulating in the water jackets (where the cylinder head and engine block water passages meet) to pass into the combustion chamber.
Cylinder head damage or a cracked cylinder block can also cause water to leak into the combustion chamber. This water evaporates in the combustion chamber and comes out of the exhaust as white smoke.
In gasoline vehicles, if the injectors are leaking/dripping, white smoke comes out of the exhaust.
White smoke coming out of the exhaust during the first start-up on cold winter mornings is normal.
Possible causes of white smoke coming from the exhaust
- Cooling system failure: Due to a cooling system failure, a water/antifreeze mixture can enter the exhaust system, and this can cause white smoke.
- Fuel injection failure: A fuel injection failure can be the cause of white smoke from the exhaust. The vehicle can burn excess fuel, and this can cause white smoke from the exhaust.
- Exhaust intake system failure: Due to an exhaust intake system failure, exhaust gases can leak into the vehicle’s cabin, and this can cause white smoke.
- Exhaust valve failure: Due to an exhaust valve failure, exhaust gases can leak into the vehicle’s cabin, and this can cause white smoke.
- Exhaust pipe failure: Due to an exhaust pipe failure, exhaust gases can leak into the vehicle’s cabin, and this can cause white smoke.
- Catalytic converter failure: Due to a catalytic converter failure, exhaust gases can leak into the vehicle’s cabin, and this can cause white smoke.
To determine which of these causes is present, the vehicle needs to be examined by a service center. Additionally, especially if a very large amount of white smoke is coming out, this points to a serious fault related to the vehicle’s combustion system.
Cause of White Smoke
Thick white smoke coming from the exhaust usually points to coolant leaking into the combustion chamber.
Cylinder Head Gasket
A burned cylinder head gasket is the most common cause of coolant mixing into the cylinders.
Normal White Vapor
Light white vapor that quickly dissipates from the exhaust in cold weather comes from condensation and is normal.
Related Questions
When the cylinder head gasket fails, the water cooling the engine can leak into the combustion chamber. This water evaporates at combustion temperature and comes out of the exhaust as thick white smoke.
In cold weather, moisture in the exhaust pipe condenses when it meets the cold outside air, forming temporary vapor. This smoke disappears as the engine warms up; this is a seasonal appearance, not a fault.
