In our “How It’s Made” category, the topic of this article will be: how are bearings made? You can watch the video below about the manufacturing stages of bearings.
How Are Bearings Made ? THE MANUFACTURING STAGES OF A BEARING
Bearings are parts manufactured to transmit a required motion with as little friction as possible, meaning the least possible loss of power.
Even if we haven’t set foot in the world of machining, we’ve surely all encountered bearings at some point in our lives. The older generation in particular knows bearings well. What should a good bearing be like? Where can you get bearings? That generation knew this well. Why? To build their own homemade “roller coaster,” in a sense.
Yes, we’re talking about homemade wooden scooters 🙂 Whatever they were called everywhere, kids growing up in Anatolia or in the slightly out-of-the-way corners of big cities knew these scooters well.
With the boundless energy of childhood, we’d coast for meters down a slope and then, to feel that same thrill again, climb the same distance back up.

The joy of building our own toy out of odds and ends of wood we found here and there was something else entirely.

Those who never got the chance to see or build one of these scooters will recognize bearings from their bicycles instead : they sit on the axle at the center of the wheel, where the rim is attached. The higher the quality of the bearing, and the less friction it has, the more easily motion is transmitted from the pedals to the bicycle.

In fact, almost every machine that produces rotational motion around an axis has a bearing. Washing machines, fans, industrial equipment, electric motors, etc.

The importance of bearings to industry is so great that during World War II, the Allies’ bombing operations against Nazi Germany initially focused on the ball bearing factories in Schweinfurt and Regensburg.
Because they knew that strategic assets being produced during the war, such as tanks, anti-aircraft guns, armored vehicles, and trucks, couldn’t operate without bearings.
In fact, we could say a bearing is a marvel of technology. Before we move on to the question of how it’s made, we should mention that for it to work properly and last a long time, the balls inside it and the race the balls sit in must be manufactured as precisely as possible.
The more precisely they are manufactured, the more they’ll reduce friction and the more they’ll increase the system’s efficiency.

. There’s really a lot more that could be written about this marvel of a part called a bearing, but perhaps those will be topics for other articles. See you in our next articles.
