Making the die and punch out of carbide extends the die’s service life. However, to reduce die costs, the die and punch are not made entirely of carbide. The punch body and die frame are made of steel material.

The figures above and below show the mounting of carbide punches onto the punch body.

The carbide die used in drawing dies is also called the draw ring. The profile of the draw ring’s edge is shaped based on the drawing operation. The figure below shows the die-edge profile along with the first and redraw operations.

The nose radius of a carbide die and punch is the same as that of a die and punch made of ordinary steel. In general, the punch nose radius should be chosen between 4T and 7T, and the die radius between 5T and 10T.
Choosing too small a radius for the punch nose or the die causes cracking at the punch nose or the die edge.

The figure above shows a carbide die and its frame.

The table above gives die and frame dimensions for drawing operations, according to the type of material being drawn. (DIN 1547)
