The efficiency of gear wheels
In this article, we’ve shared a slide presentation covering strength calculations for spur gear wheels. We think it could be useful for students, teachers, mechanical engineers, and technical staff working on this topic. Until we meet again in a new article.
Tooth Root Stress
In gear strength calculations, the Lewis formula is used to estimate the bending stress occurring at the tooth root.
Module Selection
As the gear module increases, tooth thickness increases, and the load capacity that can be carried increases accordingly.
Material Hardness
The surface hardness of the steel used in gear wheels significantly affects wear resistance and strength.
Related Questions
The force acting on a tooth is concentrated most at the tooth root, and this area is the most prone to fracture. If this calculation isn’t done, the gear can fatigue and break earlier than expected, causing the entire mechanism to stop.
Even if the tooth root doesn’t break, the high pressure at the contact surface can, over time, create small pits (pitting) on the surface and wear down the gear. Since this is a different type of damage, it requires a separate calculation and check.
