In this article, in our Machine Elements section, we’ll give information about what a rack gear is and what it’s used for, and we’ll give examples of the applications of a rack gear. If you’re wondering where rack gears are used, keep reading.
What Is a Rack Gear
A rack gear is a bar with straight or helical teeth cut into it, used together with a cylindrical gear called a pinion, generally to convert rotary motion into linear motion.

A rack gear’s teeth can be made straight or helical. It’s known in English as a “rack gear.”
Rotary-to-Linear Conversion
A rack-and-pinion system converts the pinion’s rotary motion into linear motion along the rack.
Use in Steering Systems
In automobiles, the rotation of the steering wheel is converted into the wheels changing direction by the rack-and-pinion mechanism.
High Precision
Rack-and-pinion systems can also be used for precise control of axis movement on CNC machines.
Applications of a Rack Gear
The applications of a rack gear are varied. But in general terms, a rack-and-pinion gear pair is used to convert rotary motion into linear motion.

In the mechanism that raises and lowers the drill bit on a drill press, we see a rack-and-pinion pair (above)

One advantage of using it on this type of machine is that rack gears can tolerate dirty environments.

Another example of a rack gear’s applications is lathes. On lathes, where cylindrical machine parts are manufactured, moving the carriage back and forth along the ways is also achieved by means of a rack gear.

We can find rack-and-pinion gear sets in many places where rotary (circular) motion is converted into linear motion. As another example of this, automobiles use this type of gear set to convert the rotation of a steering wheel into the linear left/right motion needed to steer the vehicle.

Rack-and-pinion steering is by far the most commonly used type of steering in cars, small trucks, and SUVs. It’s actually a fairly simple mechanism.
A rack-and-pinion gear set is enclosed inside a metal tube. A bar called a rod is connected to each end of the rack.
The pinion gear is connected to the steering shaft. When you turn the steering wheel, the pinion rotates and moves the rack. The rod at each end of the rack connects to the steering arm on the spindle.
On rack gears, rigidity is the same along the full length.

Rack gears are also one of the important mechanisms used in robotic applications to convert rotary motion into linear motion.

Another example of a rack gear’s applications is electric garage and garden gates. A pinion gear connected to an electric motor — controlled remotely or by a security guard pressing a button — opens and closes the gate that has a rack gear mounted on it.
We can also see rack gears used for lifting loads in jacks, in certain clamping fixtures, and in various rail-mounted cranes.
Comprehension question
What is the purpose of using rack gears?
A) Converting linear motion into angular motion
B) Transmitting force and motion at a desired angle
C) Converting rotary motion into linear motion

Related Questions
The pinion gear, which turns with the steering wheel, meshes with the toothed, straight rack bar. As the pinion rotates, this rotary motion slides the rack bar linearly to the right or left, and this motion is transmitted to the wheels.
This system can convert rotary motion into linear motion with high precision. This precision is well suited to moving the machine’s axes to the correct position in very small, repeatable steps.
