Mercedes-Benz Distronic Plus Cruise Control System

mercedes benz distronic cruise control system

Distronic Plus is an adaptive cruise control system developed by the German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz, featuring safety capabilities never seen before.

Distronic Plus automatically maintains a certain distance from the vehicle ahead. It can also accelerate and decelerate in coordination with moving traffic. This feature is especially useful in stop-and-go traffic. Distronic follows the vehicle ahead. It can also continue following the vehicle ahead. As a result, this minimizes the risk of a rear-end collision.

How Does Mercedes-Benz Distronic Plus Work?

Distronic Plus is the most advanced technology. It consists of three radars. A long-range radar is placed behind the radiator grille, and two short-range radars are placed behind the front bumper panels. The short-range radar has a scanning range of 20 cm to 30 meters, and a scanning angle of 80°.

The long-range radar has two ranges. Its long-range mode has a range of 200 meters and a scanning angle of 18°. The same radar’s mid-range mode has a range of 60 meters and a scanning angle of 60°.

Both radars work in coordination and continuously scan the surroundings. The microcomputer in the Distronic system processes the radar data to continuously monitor the situation ahead. The radar basically works based on the Doppler Effect. That is, when the vehicle ahead moves, it causes a frequency shift in the radar signal. Based on this frequency shift, the system calculates the relative speed of the two vehicles and the distance between them.

In the end, it calculates everything by looking at the transit time of the reflected signal. In the event of emergency braking, the system alerts the driver with an audible signal as well as a warning light on the dashboard.

Advantages of Mercedes-Benz Distronic Plus:

Distronic Plus keeps a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. It automatically applies the brakes and can even bring the car to a complete stop when traffic ahead isn’t moving. It also automatically reaches the desired speed by following traffic ahead once the traffic situation improves. The tedious cycle of accelerating and braking in slow-moving traffic can be entirely avoided. This helps relieve driver stress in stop-and-go traffic.

Radar-Based System

Distronic Plus continuously measures the distance to the vehicle ahead with radar sensors and automatically adjusts speed.

Follows to a Complete Stop and Restart

In traffic jams, the system can bring the vehicle to a complete stop and automatically restart it once the vehicle ahead moves.

Integration with Steering Assist

Distronic Plus generally works together with lane-keeping assist to provide a semi-autonomous driving experience.

Related Questions

Each radar covers a different range and angle: one scans long distance with a narrow angle, while the others scan short distance with a wide angle. Combining all three ensures both distant and nearby vehicles are reliably tracked.

Since the system can automatically slow down and speed up based on the vehicle ahead’s speed, the driver doesn’t need to constantly press the brake and gas pedals. This reduces the burden on the driver in heavy traffic.
