Punches are made in various shapes and sizes depending on where and how they’ll be used. Punches are generally classified by how they’re mounted to the punch plate. These are;
- Shouldered cylindrical flange-head punches,
- Shouldered plain cylindrical-head punches,
- Countersunk-head punches,
- Punches of various other types and profiles.

Shouldered cylindrical flange-head punches are widely used. These punches are generally preferred in dies with high piercing or blanking force. (Image above.)

Special-purpose standard punches (above)

A shouldered plain cylindrical-head punch (above). Shouldered plain cylindrical-head punches are mounted to the punch plate with the help of a spring-loaded ball. These punches are used in dies with low piercing or blanking force.

Countersunk-head punches, like plain cylindrical-head punches, are generally used in small dies with low piercing and blanking force.
